Life can be pretty crazy when you’re on your own, but when you have a family too? Now you have to manage your own schedule plus the schedule of your children and spouse; everything coming together as cohesively as possible. More often than not, however, chaos is the ruling junta of the house, and you’re desperate for five minutes of simple, quiet me time, which tends to leave important things like fitness off the table. Fitness is so important, though! So important! So how do you do it? How do I do it? It’s possible, my friends, and I have a few tips to help you get some activity in your day, no matter how busy it may be!
1| Get off the couch. Seriously, it’s the first step to getting active and healthy. Just get up, and stay up, no matter what. It keeps your muscles engaged, your body in motion. You automatically burn more calories, so get off the couch. Do it now!
2| Have a dance party. I have four girls, so this is pretty easy for me. I don’t have to impress anyone with my stellar white girl moves, so I crank up the tunes and get grooving with the kids. They love it, I love it, and you’ll love it too. Crank it up a notch by including those hula hoops.
3| Take a boring hardcore workout and turn it fun by remembering your childhood. OK, that was a long one, but it’s true. When a workout is super hard and super boring, you’re less likely to stick with it. That’s a fact. So find a way to make it fun. I don’t like to jump rope, but you know what I do like? Double dutch! You can involve the whole family in this workout, and if you’ve never tried double dutch, prepare to get addicted, because it’s hard, so hard! But so much fun. You’ll work up a sweat in no time.
4| Get up 10 minutes early. Stay up 10 minutes late. BAM! That’s 20 minutes of workout time without feeling like you need get up at the crack of dawn or stay up until 2am. Ten minutes of working out in the morning, even if it’s just a power walk around the block, will boost your metabolism for the entire day, causing you to burn more calories, and a quick workout at night will keep it running while you’re asleep too. It’s a win-win!
5| Get your friends involved! Fitness by yourself is hard, but when you have a group of friends to workout with, you get the solidarity and support you need to succeed! Now, I’m not saying you need to be physically together to workout. But so long as you can talk to each other, cheer each other on, and monitor your goals together, it’s all positive. Join some low-key fitness groups too, and tackle group challenges to keep inspired, like the #NOEXCUSES fitness series. You can do this, and there are plenty of people out there who want to help you and cheer you on!
