Everyone knows I have four daughters. Four crazy, wild, beautiful, fun daughters. They are my princesses, and when they want to party like princesses, I have a hard time saying no. Seriously, it’s hard to deny them when they are being so cute and well-behaved. They know how work me, ha ha ha, just like I worked my mom and she worked her mom. Kids be cray, yo. The girls decided they wanted to have a princess slumber party with their cousins, so I definitely had my work cut out for me, because seven kids and four adults equals a lot of preparation.
Even though there is a lot of work involved, it doesn’t have to be hard work! I’m going to share a few tips and tricks to hosting a perfect princess slumber party so you can have one for your own little princesses without fear, or the loss of hair from pulling it out in a stress-fueled panic attack!
1| Pick a theme. More than just princess, what princess are you emulating for the party? We went with Disney’s Sleeping Beauty since it was just released on DVD earlier this month! So pinks and blues were our go-to colors, with whites and soft yellows for accents.
2| Create a menu. You will want to create the menu based on the time-of-day of the party, as well as the theme. Since we had a slumber party, we went with snacks for evening fun and I made some mini scones for the perfect princess breakfast. I also made sure I incorporated my color scheme into the foods with an ombre frosted pink cake, blue frosted cupcakes, and red and pink candies. I included oreo balls, tea sandwiches, chips, and pink lemonade to round off the food choices.
3| Pick your space. Figure out where the main table is going to be, and start setting it up with plates, silverware, the whole nine yards. Do this before you even start making your food, so you know how much room you have for each item, and where they will fit best. Make sure you place napkins and silverware so leave a space for them on the final table! Use the setup as a template to start…
4| Decorating! Since you now know how much space you have to decorate, it’s time to hit up Walmart to grab some great American Greetings party supplies! Get creative and have fun, keeping to your theme, of course. Grab some special Disney Princess decorations, or grab some in your theme colors, whatever works! Make the space your own and it will look awesome. I threw in some special touches with milk bottle glasses tied with colored twine, and chevron straws too, then placed some tissue poms on the table for dimension and whimsy. The girls loved it.
5| Don’t forget the fun! Plan some simple activities based on the ages of the kids attending the party. Teach them how to have a proper tea party, or have a princess training class with silly games like who can walk with a book on her head the longest! Or if you have any princes attending, set up a rescue scenario with an adult acting as the evil queen, or a monster, and let the prince rescue the princesses. Or hey, if the princesses want to defeat the enemy too, have at it! Just be sure everyone can get involved.
6| Be flexible. Kids are kids. They might not want to play what you’ve scheduled, or eat what you’ve prepared, but that’s life. Be flexible and let be what will be. My kids weren’t into everything I wanted them to do, but when I left them to their own devices, they had a blast, and that’s what it’s all about.
7| Finally, settle them down for sleep. There is nothing worse than a party that goes all night, with kids who get cranky and worn out but refuse to sleep. So settle them down at your princess slumber party with a quiet, cuddly showing of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty! We piled all the kids onto the couch to start the movie, and eventually worked them down onto fluffy pillows on the shag rug, where they fell asleep just minutes before the movie ended, much to my delight!
Make sure you head over to your local Walmart to pick up the Diamond Edition of Sleeping Beauty and all the American Greetings decorations you can get your hands on so you can host the perfect princess slumber party this weekend!
