Ingredients

Salisbury Steaks

  • 2 ½ lbs 85/15 ground beef
  • 2 cups panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup Worchestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 2 teaspoons dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil for cooking

Onion Gravy

  • 3 tablespoons salted butter
  • cup sweet yellow onion diced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • cup Worchestershire sauce
  • 3 cups beef stock
  • sea salt to taste
  • black pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Combine Salisbury steak ingredients, except the olive oil, in a large bowl until thoroughly mixed, then divide into 8 evenly shaped patties. Set aside.
  • In a large pan, melt the butter over medium heat, then add the onion and cook for 3-4 minutes or until lightly softened. Stir in the flour until a paste forms, then add the Worchestershire sauce and stir to combine. Slowly whisk in the beef stock and bring mixture to a low boil over medium heat. Cook until thickened, about 10 minutes, season with salt and pepper as desired, then reduce heat to the lowest setting while cooking the steaks.
  • In a second large non-stick pan over medium/medium-high heat, add 1 tablespoon olive oil. Once hot, add half of the patties and cook for 4 minutes before flipping and cooking until no longer pink, about 5 minutes more. Remove steaks from pan and nestle into the gravy to keep warm, then add remaining olive oil and steaks and cook until no longer pink. Plate steaks and drizzle with remaining gravy. Best served with creamy mashed potatoes, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Different from regular hamburgers, you want all the spices and fillers to create patties that are almost like little meatloaves.
  • Panko breadcrumbs lend delicious texture and taste, but you can use day-old bread that you have on hand, or smash up crackers instead (my favorite crackers to use are Club).
  • Worcestershire sauce provides the ultimate umami to both the easy Salisbury steak and the onion gravy, but you can swap out half of it for some soy sauce for even more flavor. I do this with the gravy more often than the steaks themselves.
  • For a super rich, flavorful gravy, use a high-quality salted butter.
  • Make sure your pan is nice and hot before adding the Salisbury steaks, you want a crispy sear on the outside while keeping the interior of the steak juicy.
