I am frequently questioned on the tools I use to capture my photos and video. And while it’s honestly the photographer and not the equipment that makes a photo amazing, it certainly can’t hurt to get your hands on quality equipment!

CAMERAS + LENSES
the perfect starter kit
This was my first DSLR and it served me well. It’s inexpensive and easy to use! Pair it with an inexpensive nifty-fifty and you’re ready to rock the food blogger world. I used this camera on posts like this one.

take it to the next level
A couple years ago I made the investment in upgrading my camera. After a lot of research, I made the switch to a Canon camera. They’re a little bit cheaper than Nikon upgrades, and the features are really user-friendly. It’s a solid camera for photography and videography. Start with the Canon’s nifty-fifty and work your way up from there. I recommend the 24-70mm lens, especially for videography!

ESSENTIAL GEAR
tripod
Sturdy is where it’s at. You don’t have to go expensive to get started, so a Neewer tripod will tide you over.
reflectors
An absolute necessity, reflectors help even out the light in various scenarios. I generally only use the white and black reflectors, but a full set won’t break the bank.
sd card
There is nothing worse than waiting on your memory card to process images before you can take more, or running out of room halfway through a shoot. Get a big, fast SD card so your worries will be elsewhere.
external monitor
A must for videography, this monitor is inexpensive and gives you a great view, especially when shooting from overhead. Don’t forget to grab some batteries though, they aren’t included!
