Before I had Afton, I told myself that there was no way I’d allow kid stuff to accumulate everywhere like I’d seen in the homes of so many mothers I already knew. No way. But I was definitely naive, because as soon as Afton arrived, I no longer cared if there were bouncers in the living room, baskets full of toys next to the couch, or every type of bottle and bottle accessory piled high on the counters. My home screamed Mom and it stayed that way through four kids.
My home was Mom Style and I needed to break out, and get back to Karly Style. How am I defeating Mom Style at home, and how can you break those mom-shackles? Well, I have a few tips to help inspire you!
1| Pick your colors. My faves are greens, blues, black/gray, and silver. Use these colors to help coordinate your decor, and if you find yourself stuck in the Land of Beige, use your favorite colors as accents to draw the eyes away from that pesky brown.
2| Mix patterns. I have a ton of patterns going on just in this one spot in my living room; chevron, floral, and geometric, just to name a few. It brings pieces to life, and breaks up monotonous colors.
3| Add special touches. I know it can be hard decorating with little hands getting into everything. So add small pieces in places that are safe from kids, like higher shelves, kitchen counters, or on top of wide picture frames. I had my husband install a shelf on a bare wall instead of hanging pictures and added a chevron-shaded lamp, some air plant pods in shades of blue, and other smaller embellishments.
4| Stylize your usually less than stylish necessities. When you have kids, there are some things you just have to have, like Kleenex. They recently created the Kleenex Style Studio, which is a super fun way to discover new designs that’ll compliment your home and life. They even collaborated with Isaac Mizrahi to create four unique and inspiring styles to help you step out of the Mom Zone and into Awesome City. Now you don’t have sacrifice style for comfort. Wipe those noses, blot your lipstick, clean those spills, and look good doing it.
And don’t think that style can’t carry over into your bag, because Kleenex has you covered. Between those diapers and piles of store receipts, you can find some super cute slim packs to take care of anything that arises while out of the house.
With all the new designs, do you think you could figure out which is high fashion and which is Kleenex? Take the quiz and find out how you score!
