Exploring Options

I feel like turkey is underutilized. I don’t know why, either, because it’s such a tender, lean meat!

Outside of Thanksgiving dinner and your run-of-the-mill sandwiches, turkey seems to sit far outside of the limelight, and that’s not very fair, because turkey is delicious.

So today, we’re giving turkey a chance in this flavorful burrito bowl recipe, and with all the amazing spices and herbs in Watkins Organic Spices and Spices Blends line, I think you’ll love adding more turkey to your meal planning schedule!

What’s In This Turkey Burrito Bowl Recipe?

Pure deliciousness!

In the most basic sense, we have:

  • Seasoned ground turkey
  • Cilantro lime rice
  • Crunchy lime crema slaw

But what’s really going on with each part of this dish?

  • Combining apple cider vinegar with Watkins Organic Spices lends incredible and complex flavors to the turkey.
  • Fresh lime juice and cilantro adds brightness to rice for a refreshing base.
  • Jalapeño lime slaw adds a creamy, spicy crunch.
  • Avocado lends a cool creaminess to balance the spice.
  • Grated cotija brings a naturally salty finish and evens out all the bold flavors.

How To Make This Burrito Bowl

Like my fabulous tater tot hotdish, to build a wonderfully balanced but potent flavor profile, we’re mixing it up with some of the highest-quality, USDA Organic Certified and Non-GMO Project Verified herbs and spices from Watkins!

For this recipe, we’re utilizing some of my favorite Watkins organic spices and spice blends, including:

  • Organic Garlic Powder
  • Organic Oregano Leaves
  • Organic Ground Black Pepper

Did you know Watkins recently expanded their organic spices and spice blends line to include over 40 different varieties?! As a Minnesota company (holla!), you really can’t go wrong with any of their products, as Watkins is one of the world’s top purveyors in natural and gourmet flavoring products for more than 150 years. You can find Watkins at local stores such as Cub Foods, SuperValu, Menards, WinCo, Food Lion, and more, and online as well!

The fun thing about this recipe, in addition to the amazing flavors, is how easy it is to make!

  • Start by making the rice, since it takes the longest time.
  • Whip up the slaw during the first minutes of the rice cooking and let marinate.
  • Cook up the turkey during the last minutes of the rice cooking, so everything is hot and fresh at the same time.
  • Assemble with sliced avocado and grated cotija and dive on in!

See? Super easy!

Instructions

  • In a medium-sized pot over high heat, combine 1 ¾ cups water with the rice and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and let cook for 15-20 minutes, or until water is fully absorbed. Remove pot from heat and stir in the lime juice and cilantro. Season with salt and pepper and set aside, covered, until ready to plate.
  • While the rice cooks, whisk together the sour cream, lime juice, and garlic. Add the jalapeño and slaw mix and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper to taste and toss once more, then set aside.
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil. Add the turkey seasonings to a small bowl and whisk to combine. Add the apple cider vinegar and mix to make a paste. Add the paste to the turkey and mix until thoroughly combined. Once the olive oil is shimmering, add the turkey and cook, breaking it into small pieces as it cooks, until no longer pink, around 6 minutes. Remove from heat.
  • Divide the rice between 4 bowls, then top with the turkey and slaw. Add slices of avocado and a tablespoon of cotija cheese to each bowl. Enjoy immediately.

Notes

Forgot to pick up some ingredients? You can sub out the fresh cilantro for Watkins Organic Cilantro Leaves instead, and you can also use Watkins Organic Paprika instead of smoked paprika, though you will lose a bit of the signature smoky flavor. It's delicious either way!
